DCA Fine Art is pleased to announce Recessed, a solo exhibition featuring the work of Los Angeles based artist Tony Brown. Recessed debuts at DCA, Saturday, March 8, 2008 with an artist reception from 6pm-9pm, and continues through April 11, 2008.
In his new DCA exhibit, Tony Brown continues to bring to the surface the aesthetics of the forgotten, the discarded. With his interest in the natural weathering and dilapidation of time-worn objects, Brown re-imagines seemingly lackluster items that have been deemed obsolete and unattractive. The textured, often windswept surfaces of his found objects present themselves as a historical record that frames civilization within a larger context, one that enables the artist to see "poetry" in all matter of floatsam and jetsam.

Between the seats of an old couch, beyond the layout of a daily newspaper, on the underside of a desk, Brown finds uncommon content from which he realizes his paintings, sculpture, and collages. For Brown, his work involves a "rigorous search for beauty amidst materials that have been cast aside." It's a discovery of things hidden and things in plain view, a fascinating expedition we are all invited to join.
Gallery owner and Recessed curator Delia Cabral remarks, "Tony Brown forwards the conversation Robert Rauschenberg started in the treatment of objects as media. Tony applies found objects – fabrics, decayed window panes, and every day mundane items – much the same way a painter uses paint to create something new. For instance, scotch tape on a wood panel refracts light much like the scales of a fish. The tape is no longer tape; it has literally and playfully been transformed."

She continues, "Tony allows us to bask in the sheer aesthetic pleasure of experiencing an object. He gives us back what we had as children – the innate ability to access the wonder in things, to see an object's color, pattern, beauty and grace without it being typecast by functionality, labels, or even definitions. His work is an assault on cynicism, a tonic for our culture's 'been there, done that' syndrome."
Indeed, like a child's imagination, Brown's work is not held back by what things were or are. Instead, his is an art of radical possibility where the artist operates in total freedom to envision what things could be. A paint blotch becomes a still life, a bougainvillea pattern becomes an architectural structure, a couch becomes a Samurai warrior. "Recessed is a refreshing contrast to the flood of intellectualized, conceptual work making the rounds," concludes Cabral. "In this show, Tony Brown reacquaints us with art's transformative and magical properties; it's a rush of pure imagination and creativity."
